So Close

I can’t believe that I forgot to post yesterday.  I had the window open, but then got distracted helping Noah with his homework and then playing a very intense game of Monkey in the Middle.

I’ll give myself some credit for making it 25 straight days.  That is impressive in and of itself as I don’t know that I have posted many more than 25 times all year.  Writing has taken a backseat–well at least my writing here.  I do plenty of “writing for work” and for that little thing called a dissertation.  But it isn’t the same. I miss writing here and this month has reminded me of that.  I also have to acknowledge that I am busy and just like in my work life–I need structure for this space.  So, I’ll be giving some thought to some regular topics and a weekly schedule.  This will certainly help me focus my writing more as will a dedicated writing time.

What If Money Did Not Matter

I sat down this morning to grade papers and write a pithy post about the amazing dinner I had last night (the red wine reduction sauce was TO DIE FOR–I could have just had a bowl if it).

But then I read Kelly’s post and it really got me thinking.  One thing I thought was I wish I could have taken Kelly and The Cuban to dinner with us–because they would have loved every bite (and it was a small business).  Our dinner started off with a blue cheese souffle and it only got better.

Back to Kelly’s thought provoking question:  What if Money Didn’t Matter?

What if it didn’t?  How might my life be different?  I like to think that most of my life wouldn’t change.  I’d still work in education–but how might that change?  I’d have to be honest and say that I would start a school (a charter school) that was guided by the same student centered progressive education that my kids get at their private school.  I so believe in the education that my kids get, that if money didn’t matter I would work tirelessly to bring that type of education to students in our urban center.

If money didn’t matter, I would take my family to live in Ethiopia for a year.  Giving my children the gift of their birth country and it’s rich heritage.  I would then write a book chronicling the journey, fused with narratives from my children on their experience.

If money didn’t matter, my husband wouldn’t work his high-stress computer job; he’d probably open a breakfast restaurant and have his afternoons off to volunteer and play golf.  Or he’d be a teacher (he is torn).

If money didn’t matter, I’d have more time to finish my dissertation.  Ah, that’s would be amazing.

But I live in a world where it does.  Maybe I live in a world where it is only the perception that money matters.  Thinking about how money drives so many of the decisions we make is sad.  I have been fortunate enough to get to follow my dreams regardless of money–because my husband has always been the breadwinner.  He has sacrificed his dreams, so that I could achieve mine.  I am happy that I was able to make lots of choices without thinking about money (I’ll be paying dearly for that–those student loans won’t pay for themselves).

So, how would your life be different if money didn’t matter?

Something Nice

So today, I did something nice.  Not just for me but for my MIL.  For my birthday, I asked for a gift certificate to my favorite local spa and I wondered if my MIL had ever had a pedicure.  This came up because maybe she asked Bill what I like to do at the spa, or something.  I thought it would be something fun for us to do together.  A sort of bonding.  We don’t do much of that–partly because I usually only see her twice a year and we aren’t particularly close.  When she comes to visit, she really comes to visit with her son and that is who she wants to spend time with, not me or her grand kids so much.

I told Bill I thought it would be fun and he then told him mom that I had planned that for us.  I still can’t believe that in 78 years she has not had a pedicure.  But I guess that is more the norm than having them maybe.  I don’t know–dear readers, do you get pedis?

My usual spa was booked when I finally got around to making reservations.  So, I did some research and the interwebs seems to think the the Four Seasons Hotel spa was great.  I thought that was a pretty believable opinion since the Four Seasons does pretty much everything great.

I eagerly booked our appointment–I admit, I couldn’t wait to go the Four Seasons spa.  Who doesn’t want to be completely pampered, valet parking, steam room, hot whirlpool tub, tranquility rooms, oh my!

I will say that the pedicure was fabulous.  We arrive a few minutes early and got to spend time in the tranquility room–super comfy lounge chairs, waterfall in the background, looking out over the river.  Then the long walk to the pedicure room which ended with a pretty fabulous pedicure.

It was fun to get to experience it with my MIL and cure to watch her squirm a little–she is apparently ticklish on her feet.  She really enjoyed it, even though I know it was hard for her to be pampered–it just isn’t her thing and I can understand that.

Getting a pedicure makes me feel pretty–there is just something about having smooth feet with painted toes that is AHMAZING!  My MIL didn’t get her nails painted–she is simple, but her choice really confused Zoë.  Zoë just couldn’t understand that you could get a pedicure without getting your nails painted.

So, while my MIL will never be close (it’s been 16 years), I had a great time with her today and I hope she enjoyed it.

Dear Santa

We do not shop on Black Friday. There is something very off putting about the over the top consumption perpetuated by Black Friday that exemplifies some of the deep-rooted ways that big companies manipulate us to think we need things we don’t.

On a related note-the kids make their Christmas lists today.

The kids want pretty simple things and only a few things which makes me happy. I like that they only want a couple things and they are relatively simple requests.
