So Cal What Are You Doing To Me?

We are here in San Diego.  Where it is suppose to warm and and balmy.  Yesterday (the day we had planned to go the wild animal park) it decided to give us winds (20 mph), rain (lots of rain) and cool weather (40’s).  Really.  I flew from the midwest to enjoy the sun…I didn’t see the sun yesterday until about 5:30 pm yesterday.  It was beautiful when the sun decided to poke itself out…

We met Hayat and her family last night briefly.  She is a doll and just as cute as can be.  Her parents are pretty awesome too, as is her big sister.  It was nice to finally meet–even though I feel like I knew them already.  We are going to meet the other families today.  The kids were awesomely cute together

Internalized Racism Is

something I will have to be aware of to effectively parent my Ethiopian children as a white mother/woman.  Internalized racism is the taking on of the values and perspectives of the dominant culture–including things that are detrimental to a person’s own image or sense of self.  For those of us raising girls–watch this…

A Much Needed WAITING Break

I now know for sure that I will not be getting a referral until after our agency’s director returns from Ethiopia.  It is really refreshing and freeing to know that.  I can now relax and enjoy Wannafest.  I am so excited about it.  I am packed and like a little kid–pretty much sitting by the front door just waiting for time to pass so I can get on the plane. I am trying not to think about the 4 hours in confined quarters with a toddler who doesn’t know how to sit/stand/be still.  I think I just might poke myself in the eyes with a sharp stick.  Maybe not–because then how would I see the other lovely little toddlers that didn’t drive their parents crazy–because I know they are perfect!

Well…I will try to post a picture or two from our trip–as long as parents don’t mind (as all of their blogs are private sans one).  I will certainly post the obituary of whomever doesn’t make it through the flight–me, hubby, Minnow or the poor people sitting near us…

I am off to bask in the sun…I plan on wearing nothing on my feet except flip flops for the next 5 days.

239 Days

of waiting to meet our baby girl and we are still waiting… I am starting to realize that it will be a little longer and that I don’t have to stop breathing every time the phone rings until the caller id registers.  Well, we leave for San Diego in 28 hours and I cannot wait.  It certainly isn’t as cold here as it is for my buddy MP but it is 20 and that is cold enough for me. I have to say MP is my hero–I don’t know how she magages all the bone splitting cold weather.

San Diego here we come…

To Do Before Wannafest ’08

**edited for completion**

  1. Buy dryer sheets to finish laundry so that we are presentable.
  2. Acutally separate and put laundry in washing machine and move it to dryer in a timely fashion.
  3. Pull laundry out of dryer prior to deep and irremoveable wrinkling.
  4. Fold said laundry and put it in a suitcase so that I do not have to buy entire new wardrobe in San Diego.
  5. Finish one 5-7 page paper on my personal culture.
  6. Finish grading stack of papers from students–for some reason they want feedback. (only halfway done)
  7. Finish reading 2 chapters in Social Justice book.
  8. GET REFERRAL–wishful thinking.  But really, they told me we were getting close and it would be soon…This week would constitute soon. Right?
  9. Decide which car seat to bring.– I know really how hard can the choice be
  10. Talk brother into feeding cats and fish
  11. Vacuum.
  12. Do Dishes.
  13. Clean out fridge.
  14. GET REFERRAL–oh wait did I say that already?
  15. Pack camera, lenses, and video camera.

Not too much right?
